The Journey Begins
Dick Grant and Tom Wood grew up next door to each other in a small upstate New York town called Liberty. They probably first met in a sandbox somewhere, went to kindergarten, grade school and high school together and enjoyed the seasons and sensibility of rural America life. Liberty was a great little town to grow up in, but an even better town to leave. Tom was into art and went to Ringling School of Art in Florida: Dick was into words and went to Hobart College in Geneva, New York. They both went into advertising; Tom forming one of the legendary design studios in the South, Creative Services, and Dick was a copywriter and Creative Director at Advertising agencies (from Richmond to New York) before starting the Dick Grant Advertising and Salvage Company in Charleston, South Carolina. But from childhood on, the name Grant Wood intrigued them both for obvious reasons. They kept saying they should do something together. Grant DeVolson Wood (1891-1942) was an America painter best known for his paintings depicting the rural America Midwest, particularly the painting America Gothic which was one of the most famous and recognized paintings in America Art. Well, now that they are both playing the back nine on God’s great golf course, they finally got around to it. The words are Dick’s and the paintings and sculptures are Tom’s…And the journey continues.
